Renault 5 Turbo 3E presenteras officiellt: 540 hk, 1.400 kg vikt och rallyhandbroms

Renault is bringing back one of its most famous models, the 5 Turbo. But now it is not just a sports hatchback, but a real electric "mini supercar" with 540 hp and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3.5 seconds.

The original Renault 5 Turbo and Turbo 2 caused a sensation in the 1980s as they were the first French production cars with turbocharged engines and excelled in motorsport. Today they are sought after by collectors and Renault has decided to reimagine this iconic car for a new era.

The Renault 5 Turbo 3E is built on a specialised platform for rear-wheel drive electric cars. The hatchback gets an 800-volt system, a 70 kWh battery and two electric motors with a combined peak output of 540 hp and 4,800 Nm of torque.

The power structure of the car is made with a high proportion of aluminium elements, while the body is made of carbon fibre. As a result, the Renault 5 Turbo 3E weighs just 1,450kg and has a weight-to-power ratio of 2.7kg/k.p.h., which is on a par with supercars.

On the racetrack, the Renault 5 Turbo 3E can accelerate to 270 km/h and endure several hot laps before requiring a quick DC charge of up to 350 kW. The battery can be topped up from 15 to 80 per cent in 15 minutes. In standard mode, the range should be up to 400 kilometres on the WLTP cycle.

Technology and design

"Electric hyper hatchback" received four control modes (Snow, Regular, Sport and Race), drift-assist function, sports seats with six-point safety belts and even a classic "rally" vertical handbrake.

The interior trim uses carbon fibre and alcantara. There is also enough space for luggage - a rarity for such class of cars.

Limited Edition

Renault will produce just 1,980 examples of the Turbo 3E, paying homage to the year of the first Renault 5 Turbo. Each car will be individually numbered. Sales will start in the coming weeks, with first deliveries scheduled for 2027.
