Demonstrators gathered outside Tesla shops across the United States on Saturday to protest the carmaker's billionaire CEO, billionaire Elon Musk, and his drive to cut government spending to benefit President Donald Trump. The demonstrations are part of a growing reaction in North America and Europe to Musk's destructive role in Washington.

What is known.

US residents protested against Musk under the slogan "Tesla Takedown". As AP notes, the movement's website listed more than 50 demonstrations on Saturday. The largest rallies were held in New York City, Boston, Charlotte and Palo Alto. More actions are planned for March in the U.S., the U.K., Spain and Portugal.

Some Tesla owners have also reported that their cars have been mutilated with swastikas spray-painted on them, following concerns from Jewish organisations and observers about rising anti-Semitism.

Musk is following the president's directives to cut federal spending and drastically reduce the workforce, arguing that Trump's victory provided him with a mandate to restructure the US government. DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) officials have accessed confidential databases of American citizens, ordered thousands of federal job cuts, cancelled contracts and shut down units of the government, including USAID (United States Agency for International Development).

Tesla has not commented on the situation. That said, Musk's stock price has fallen by nearly a third since Trump took office, though it is still higher than it was a year ago. Forbes estimates Musk's current fortune at $359 billion.
