Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has timed the launch of the new generation Transporter and Caravelle to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the legendary Bulli. The model started as one van for all occasions, but over time has grown to three families: Transporter/Caravelle, Multivan/California and ID. Buzz/ID. Buzz Cargo. They number 13 body variants and three types of powertrains: diesel (TDI), plug-in hybrid (eHybrid) and electric (e-Transporter and e-Caravelle).

Here's What We Know

In Germany, the Transporter TDI van can be configured with prices starting from €36,780. The Caravelle TDI starts from 43,945 euros. The Transporter van is available with the eHybrid system priced from 46,453 euros and in an all-electric version with prices from 46,213 euros. The e-Caravelle has a base price of €55,480. The Caravelle eHybrid will go into production in 2026.

Engines

Three 2.0-litre four-cylinder TDI engines are the main engines for the new Transporter and Caravelle: they deliver 81 kW (110 hp), 110 kW (150 hp) and 125 kW (170 hp). TDI engines up to 150 hp are combined with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. The 170 hp TDI is always combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission. For cars with 150 hp engine, this transmission is optional.

TDI models from 150 hp and above can also be ordered with 4MOTION all-wheel drive. The plug-in hybrid in combination with the CVT automatic transmission and front-wheel drive delivers a system output of 171 kW (232 hp). The e-Transporter models are available with power outputs of 85 kW (115 hp), 100 kW (136 hp), 160 kW (218 hp) and 210 kW (286 hp). The e-Caravelle is available in versions from 100 kW. The battery capacity of the rear-wheel drive electric models is up to 64 kWh.

Body versions

The new Transporter can be configured as a van, Kombi, flatbed and - depending on the version - with two wheelbase figures and two height versions. The Caravelle is also available with two wheelbases. In the basic version, both models are 5050 mm long, which is 146 mm longer than the T6.1. With the extended wheelbase, the overall length is 5450 mm.

The flatbed version of the Transporter with double cab has a long wheelbase by default. The width of all models is 2032 mm, an increase of 128 mm compared to their predecessors. In the standard version, the height is 1984 mm (normal roof); in the case of the high roof van, the height is just under 2.5 metres. Thus, depending on the version, a cargo volume of between 5.8 and 9.0 m3 is available. Payload and towing capacity have also been increased: maximum payload up to 1.33 tonnes (+0.13 tonnes) and maximum towing capacity up to 2.8 tonnes (+0.3 tonnes).

Transporter vans are available in both the basic version and the premium PanAmericana. The flatbed is always available in the basic version. The Caravelle is available in the base version, the mid-spec Life version, the top-of-the-range Style version, and the PanAmericana version. The latter models have off-road exterior design elements and generous interior equipment. In addition, the Transporter and Caravelle are available in a special Edition series with fully customised equipment.
