Toyota Motor Corporation announced at CES 2025 in Las Vegas the completion of Phase 1 of its Woven City in Japan. Phase 1 is scheduled to open in autumn 2025 or "shortly thereafter".

Here's What We Know

Toyota Woven City is a future mobility test site. It is located at the former Higashi-Fuji plant of Toyota Motor East Japan ("TMEJ") in Susono City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Construction of the buildings of the first phase, the initial co-creation area, was completed in October 2024. Preparations for the official opening are currently underway. The site area of the first phase is about 50,000 square metres, but will be expanded to 708,000 square metres in the future.

In Woven City, innovative technologies will be developed and tested. And not only Toyota itself, but also other companies. At the moment the following companies have confirmed their participation: Daikin (manufacturer of climate control equipment), DyDo Drinco (soft drinks and other beverages), Nissin Food Products (instant noodles), UCC Japan (production and sale of coffee), Zoshinkai Holdings (educational services).

Woven City will also have its own residential complex. When the city officially opens, it will house about 360 residents, mostly Toyota employees. The total population, including the second phase and subsequent phases, will reach about 2,000.

Residents will be called "Weavers" and will be joined by "Inventors" who "share the ambition to work 'for someone else, not for themselves'." They will focus on developing and testing innovative products and services ranging from food culture to mass-producing rockets.
