The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth billions of shekels with the Israel Aerospace Company to expand production of Arrow-3 interceptor missiles.

Here's What We Know

The order for Arrow-3 missiles was increased against the backdrop of regular attacks on Israel by Iranian-made ballistic missiles launched by Yemeni Houthis. The Arrow-3 system is a key component of the country's multi-level missile defence, capable of intercepting missiles outside the exoatmosphere.

"Israel has the best air defence capability in the world," said Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz.

Arrow-3 systems began deploying in 2011 in addition to Arrow-2 systems. The exact number of units remains unknown, but production is ongoing. In addition to Israel, Arrow-3 air defence systems are also being purchased by Germany, which signed an agreement in June 2023 to purchase several batteries.

Berlin expects the air defence system to be delivered in the last quarter of 2025. The money to finance the deal will come from the €100 billion national defence fund created by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to strengthen the country's defence capabilities after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
