Three months ago British studio Rebellion in cooperation with Chinese corporation Tencent announced a new game of Sniper Elite series under the working title Project Archipelago. Its main feature was to be the genre - instead of the usual single-player stealth shooter players would be offered Battle royale.

But the developers' plans have changed dramatically.

Here's What We Know

Authoritative insider Tom Henderson shared exclusive information. He claims that the development of Project Archipelago has been cancelled. Henderson is not ready to give the exact reason for this decision, but has information that the Chinese company simply stopped funding the project. It is mentioned that at the team meeting Rebellion management hinted that the cancellation is related to the failed launch of the shooter Concord from Sony, which alerted Tencent, after which the conglomerate became more selective about its projects.

Due to the cancellation of the online shooter Rebellion will not face layoffs, and the released employees will be redirected to the development of another project - Sniper Elite: Resistance.

It sounds somewhat doubtful that the cancellation of Project Archipelago is related to the failure of Concord, as this game has nothing to do with the Battle royale genre and its fiasco is due to completely different reasons. Most likely, Tencent analysts realised that Battle royale is an outdated trend that is losing popularity, besides, new projects can't compete with the two giants of the genre - PUBG and Apex Legends.
