Here's What We Know
On Wednesday, 20 November, the Czech government plans to approve a contract for the purchase of 14 Leopard 2A4 tanks, CZ DEFENCE reports.
The deal is worth approximately USD 162 million. The contract provides for the supply of tanks without the installation of new communication and information systems, spare parts, materials and an initial supply of ammunition. It is also planned to supply one Bergepanzer 3 Buffel armoured recovery vehicle.
The manufacturer, the German company Rheinmetall, is committed to delivering the vehicles by 2026. As a result of this agreement, the 73rd Tank Battalion of the Czech Republic will have 42 Leopard 2A4 tanks and three repair and recovery vehicles.
The Czech Ministry of Defence notes that the purchase of additional tanks is aimed at strengthening the country's sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence. It is also in line with the strategic security interests defined in state documents.
